1983 Kopke Colheita
Portugal
Traditional Douro grape varieties
Deep brick in colour with a broad amber rim. Opulent aromas of dried fruit with notes of caramelised dulce de leche and a subtle hint of molasses. Seductive, enticing and delicate, laden with elegant flavours of dried fruit. Its texture is silky and deliciously creamy. A powerful wine with a remarkably elegant and persistent finish.
1983 Moulin Touchais
Couteaux de Layon, France
100% Chenin Blanc
Founded in 1787, this 150-hectare estate in the center Loire continues to be led by the Touchais family. Their vast cellars house a million bottles of rare and relatively affordable treasures. Only released after ten years in bottle, these dessert wines are among the finest Chenin Blancs of the Loire Valley. The vines are rarely affected by botrytis, and 20% of the crop is harvested early to ensure the acidity that balances the 80% late-harvest grapes. The style is balanced and restrained: true to the vintage, but focused on expressing terroir rather than power or concentration.
At 40-years-old, this golden wine may be old, but it is still glorious. Still honeyed, with hints of its past yellow and bitter-orange fruit still there, the wine is intense, with toast, almonds and a richness that is so concentrated. Drink now.
