Chango Mezcalero is traditionally a clay vessel in the shape of a monkey, dating back to the mid-1800s. Long associated with drunkeness, it seemed an obvious decision to design a clay bottle in its image. It also served another purpose during times when selling mezcal was illegal, as the perfect vessel to hide the mezcal from the authorities as it was seen as less suspicious to contain alcohol.
Santo Prohibido celebrates Bacanora's untamed past and enduring spirit when, for the most of the 20th century, producing or selling Bacanora was illegal. Even the threat of death if caught did not deter the people of Sonora from continuing production of this sacred Sonoran spirit. To pay homage and respect to this history, Santo Prohibido commissioned a Chango Mezcalero clay bottle for its latest release. Made from agave that has grown wild and untouched in the fields of Rancho San Isidro for 90 years, Santo Prohibido is a limited production of only 300 bottles. Santo Cuviso, from 1756.
