Rodionov & Sons Polugar!

December 13, 2024  /  WineBros

Rodionov & Sons
Polugar
Russia

Polugar is known as the legendary Russian bread wine, the noble father of vodka.

Pre-single column still, Russia’s version of vodka was similar to whisky; the smell and flavor reminiscent of freshly baked bread and was known as bread wine.

In 1895 Tsar Alexander III decreed to have all pot stills in Russia broken down. Distillation processes were restricted to government licensed and taxed column stills. Thus established the less nuanced spirit we know as vodka today.

The Rodionov family spearheaded a movement to restore the traditional grain spirits. Boris Rodionov, a renowned vodka historian, discovered the original recipe for the national bread wine spirit. With legislation forbidding the Polugar style of grain distillation in Russia, the Rodionov family restored an old distillery tucked away in a forest in Poland.

The Rodionov family meticulously reproduced copper pot stills from 18th century drawings. Each Polugar selection is produced in accordance with authentic recipes of Russian aristocracy in the 1700s. The bottle is designed after Queen Elizabeth’s personal snuff-bottle, circa 1745, that is on exhibit at the Russian National Museum.

The word Polugar means half-burned.

Before the advent of alcohol meters, strength and quality were achieved by boiling two portions of the distillate together into one. The resulting alcohol content was 38.5% alc/vol.

Polugar No. 1
Rye & Wheat
38.5% abv

Lovely, oily entry with a heavy, almost viscous body and a taste that reminds you of a heavy Russian rye, with a wheat aftertaste. Absolutely deadly smooth stuff.

Lovely for use in any vodka cocktail, imparting far more favour and body in somehow subtle but substantial ways to any cocktail. Where it really shines however is with food, both as a compliment and as a plate cleanser/rest between courses this spirit is capable of acting as both an enhancer and carrier of tastes and also as a rest between a corset settle and wash clean the palate.

Rodionov & Sons
Polugar No. 3
Caraway
38.5% abv

Nicely oily entry that glides across the tongue with the aromatics of the caraway blending with the wheat and rye to give you a nicely spicy liquid bread.

A good alternative for a twist on a Martini and those drinks people call vodka martinis. Works well in 'Bloody Marys', and many other drinks calling for a little spice and aromatics. Can also replace gin as a more simple alternative in certain drinks. It is also outstanding with food – particularly such as herring or other Swedish and Russian cuisine.

Barolo from Silvano Bolmida!

December 11, 2024  /  WineBros

Silvano Bolmida
Piedmont, Italy

What could be harder than finding an unknown Barolo producer with old vines in Bussia that is considered by many of the top names in the industry to be a “Maestro”, “Professore”, or, as Alessandro Masnaghetti described him, “Il Barolista dell’Anno 2012”? We do not know the answer to that question, but we managed to do it and we could not be prouder and more excited to introduce the wines of Silvano Bolmida to the Mid-Atlantic. Founded in 1999 with 2ha, his holdings now consist of 7.4 in Bussia including Vigna dei Fantini, which is the highest elevation site in Bussia and sits directly on above the famed Pianpolvere Soprano. Silvano has been making his wines in the garage of the house where he was raised. In fact, he was born in the room above what is now the cellar. The first vintage was produced in 2003. Silvano earned his enology degree from the school in Alba and has been a full-time professor for more than 20 years. Silvano’s children, Alessandra and Francesco, have now joined him and they are truly producing some of the most striking wines we have tasted from Barolo. These wines are produced in tiny quantities and are very limited.

Silvano Bolmida
Barolo DOCG
"Bussia"
100% Nebbiolo

Ripe notes of mixed berries and cherry candies, toasted cedar, pressed flowers, and sweet herbs. It has a medium-bodied frame on the palate, with ripe concentration and good freshness, as well as refined tannins.

New Pinot Noir from Kelley Fox!

Willamette Valley, Oregon

2023 is my first year of leasing Stater Vineyard, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s situated directly between The Eyrie Vineyards estate vineyard and Durant Vineyard: talk about provenance! As stated on the back label, “Sylvia Stater and her late husband, Wayne Stater, whose family roots have been in Oregon for generations, founded this enchanting little vineyard in an area of Dundee that has long been considered by many to be hallowed ground for Pinot noir. Encircled by a towering grove of cedars, firs and other mixed trees and bathed in birdsong, there’s something that feels magical about it. I love being there.”

Pinot Noir

The 2023 is medium-dark red with youthful brilliance, transparency, and lovely plays of light. The gorgeous nose is filled with ripe, red berries and cherries with minerals and spices. Already, just on the nose, there is beautiful depth that continues in the mouth on a detailed frame of serious structure. This is a super-focused, high-relief Pinot that reminds me of how high pixels give more depth and richness to an image. There are some very subtle, delicious savory components that balance the fruit. It has nice acidity and a long, clean, silky finish that delivers the details to the end.
